JESSIE LAMAR CASTLEBERRY, 89

LAKELAND - Jessie Lamar Castleberry, 68, passed away April 8, 2011 of renal cell cancer.

Mr. Castleberry was born in Moultrie, Georgia on May 23, 1942. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and former owner of B&L Windows for 9 years. He enjoyed his family and golfing.

Mr. Castleberry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Clara Castleberry; sons, Brett (Carol) Williams and Jeff (Denise) Williams; daughters, Lisa (Audie) Moncrief and Tami (Brad) Todd; brothers, Jack (Margie) Castleberry and Roger Castleberry; grandchildren, Megan, Kellie "Mandy", Brandon, Jennifer and Lyndsey Todd, Cole Moncrief, Frank (Heather) Moody, Jessica (Vince) Bernard, Miranda (Chris) Taylor, Alan, Jesse and Megan Williams; and 6 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all.

Visitation will be Thurs. from 6-8 p.m. at Gentry-Morrison Southside Chapel, 1727 Bartow Rd., Lakeland. Funeral services will be conducted Fri. at 11 a.m. at Victory Church, with burial to follow at Florida National Cemetery. Rev. Thomas A. Hughes

REV. THOMAS A. HUGHES, 73

LAKELAND - Rev. Thomas A. Hughes, 73, passed away as a result of heart failure Wednesday, April 6, 2011.

Rev. Hughes was born May 13, 1937 in Bronx, New York. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He retired in 2002 after serving in the Florida United Methodist Conference for 24 years.

Rev. Hughes is survived by wife: Elaine Hughes of Winter Garden, FL, daughter: Rebekah Hughes of Auburn, NY, step-sons: Larry McClellan and his wife Amy of Lake Placid, FL, Kenny Smith of Winter Garden, FL and Marty Smith and his wife Erin of Polk City, FL, 5 step-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11am at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 1727 Bartow Road in Lakeland, with Rev. Leo Lacey and Rev. Greg Presley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in Rev. Hughes' honor, to Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, FL or the Florida United Methodist Children's Home in Enterprise, FL.

OLDSMAR - Mrs. Patricia Carol (Goodman) Bowen, 66, passed away Monday April 11, 2011, due to lung cancer.

She was born in Lakeland, FL and moved to Oldsmar, FL from Ft. Lauderdale 16 years ago. Patricia was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority at the University of Florida.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, John; son, John W. Bowen III; daughters, Kalee M. Bowen, Erin E. Murphy, Britney Crane; sons-in-law, Robert Murphy and Crosby Crane; and grandchildren, Kaitlyn Murphy and Gavin Murphy.

Visitation will be Wed. 6 - 8pm at Gentry Morrison Southside Funeral Home, 1727 Bartow Rd. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church, Lakeland, FL. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Burial Park on Bartow Hwy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd. Clearwater, FL 33760.

Morley H. Mathewson

MORLEY H. MATHEWSON, 93

LAKELAND - Morley H. Mathewson, 93, passed away April 5, 2011 at the Oakbridge Health Care Center due to respiratory failure.

Mr. Mathewson was born July 16, 1917 in Winnipeg, Canada and grew up in Long Beach, California. 

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1941 where he played first string football before continuing to play for a short time with the Detroit Lions. He retired from IMC in 1982 and had previously worked for the American Management Association and was a past President of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers.

A loving caring family man, he is survived by his beautiful wife of 70 years, Vivian Mathewson; son, Jay; six grandchildren; and four great-grand children.

A private family service will be held in California.

LAKELAND - Howard E. Hurd, 73, passed away April 6, 2011 of heart failure.

Mr. Hurd was born in Brighton, AL on July 27, 1937. He was a veteran of the Air Force and past Fleet Administrator for the Polk County Sheriff's Office for over 20 years. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Mr. Hurd is survived by his sons, Randy and Ronny Hurd; daughters, Leigh Anne Fox and Alecia Dotson; sisters, Sara Savage and Frankie Walsh; grandchildren, Amanda Rychel, Cole and Kayleigh Fox, Logan Alderman and Landon Dotson.

Visitation will be Tues. from 10-11 am at Gentry-Morrison Southside Chapel, 1727 Bartow Rd., Lakeland. Services will be conducted at 11 am at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Oak Hill Burial Park.

GERALDINE "JERRY" JOHNSON, 89

LAKELAND - Geraldine "Jerry" Johnson, 89, went home to her Lord and Savior on April 5, 2011 due to congestive heart failure.

Ms. Johnson was born May 2, 1921 in Georgia. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church since 1962. She served the Lord through the preschool ministry for 35 years, and as a volunteer in VBS, the church library, office and kitchen.

Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Marion "Pete" Johnson; first husband of 22 years and father of twin sons who died as infants, Varnelle Parker; son, David R. Johnson; her parents, sisters, brother and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by daughters, Cindy Parker, Sharon Parker Easley and Sandra Johnson Brewer; grandchildren, Stephen and Tanya Parker, Robin Easley and Joey Nix, Keeton and Carrie Easley, Dawn and Mike Stanborough, April and Dwayne McMillian; great grandchildren, Ryan and Trenton Parker, Emma, Delaney and Hunter Easley, Bryan and Shelby Nix, Mark, Jack and Nicholas Stanborough, Cyrus, Justice and Sunny Rose McMillian; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday from noon-1 pm at Lakeland Vineyard Church. Funeral services will follow at 1 pm at the church, with interment to follow at Oak Hill Burial Park. Donations may be made to SPCA or Good Shepherd Hospice.

Jess Henry Moore

JESS HENRY MOORE, 78

LAKELAND - Mr. Jess Henry Moore, 78, passed away as a result of respiratory failure Saturday, April 2, 2011.

Born November 8, 1932 in Newport, Kentucky, he grew up in Portsmouth Ohio. He moved to Lakeland from Miami in 1989. Mr. Moore was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Air Force.

He lived at home with his wife, Norma Feazell Moore, daughters, Karyl and Kelly Moore and granddaughter, Katie Moore. He is also survived by his daughter, Kim Moore Thompson of Davie, FL and son, Jeffrey Scott Moore of N. Conway, NH, 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be conducted Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 2p.m at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
