Avon Park - Ms. Kathleen T. Vejvoda of Avon Park died of complications from dementia Thursday (Sept. 22, 2005) at The Oaks. She was 85.

Ms. Vejvoda worked as a librarian for the Diamond Alkali Co. She attended First United Methodist Church, Sebring.

Ms. Vejvoda was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Garner.

MIAMI -- Mr. August "Gus" William Bremer of Miami, who has family in Lakeland, died of cancer Tuesday (Sept. 20, 2005) in Miami. He was 56.

He was born in Jacksonville on Feb. 12, 1949. He was the director of security for Ryder Transportation Inc. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army. He was a member of Old Cutter Presbyterian in Miami.

Mr. Bremer was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Brooks Chandler Bremer. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Brooks Bremer Long, Bushnell; sisters, Sheila Fay Mendousa, Kathleen Connolly and Jennifer Bremer Doraugricchia.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday (September 24, 2005) at Oak Hill Burial Park.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Mildred K. Hughey of Lakeland died of heart failure Tuesday (Sept. 20, 2005) at Palm Terrace of Lakeland. She was 86.

Born in Lakeland on Nov. 20, 1918, she was a lifelong resident. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hughey was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hughey. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth E. Hughey, Ronald J. Hughey, Gary L. Hughey, all of Lakeland; daughters, M. Carolyn Suggs, Mulberry, Janis Bush, Lakeland; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Friday (September 23, 2005) at Gentry Morrison Southside Funeral Home, 1727 Bartow Road. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

Born in Battle Creek, Mich., on Jan. 21, 1916, she came to Lakeland from Lodi, Calif., in 1991. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Friendship Village.

Mrs. Godina is survived by her husband, Edwin Godina; daughter, Judah Mein, Lakeland; brother, Vernon Hayes, Lakeland; sister, Arlene Davis, Buckley, Mich.; two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday (September 24, 2005) at Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City, Mich. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

LAKELAND -- Mr. William N. Hammer of Lakeland died of heart failure Saturday (Sept. 17, 2005) at home. He was 79.

Born in Lynchburg, Va., on Nov. 7, 1925, he came to Lakeland from Memphis, Tenn., in 1972. He was a revenue officer for the Internal Revenue Service. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He graduated from Duke University. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served as an usher for many years.

Mr. Hammer was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn C. Hammer. He is survived by his daughters, Milli Hammer, Wendy Hammer, both of Lakeland, Judi Schultz, Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday (September 23, 2005) at First United Methodist Church.

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Dorothy B. Connor of Lakeland died of heart failure Monday (Sept. 19, 2005) at Palm Terrace of Lakeland. She was 92.

Born in Norwood, Ohio, on Nov. 28, 1912, she came to Lakeland from Batavia, Ohio, 35 years ago. She was a bookkeeper for Murphy Chevrolet in Bartow. She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and served as editor of the church paper.

Mrs. Connor was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Connor. She is survived by her brothers, Fred Benz, Montgomery, Ohio, John Benz, Isle of Palms, S.C., Robert Benz, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; sister, Virginia Lilly, Dayton, Ohio.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday (September 23, 2005) at Resurrection Catholic Church.

MULBERRY -- Mr. Robert P. Campbell of Mulberry died of Lou Gehrig's disease Sunday (Sept. 18, 2005) at home. He was 71.

Born in Quincy, Mass., on Sept. 14, 1934, he came to Mulberry from Sandwich, Mass., in 1992. He was a power plant engineer for Commonwealth Energy System at Canal Electric Plant in Sandwich. He was a member of Imperial Lakes Golf and Racquet Club. He was a member of the South Florida Cadillac Allante Auto Club. He was a Navy veteran serving as a boiler tender.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene Campbell; sons, Dennis P. Campbell, Martson Mills, Mass., David G. Campbell, Sandwich; daughters, Dianne Webber, Valrico, Sandra Brun, Sandwich; sister, Brenda Cannon, Bridgewater, Mass.; seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday (September 22, 2005) at Gentry-Morrison Dukes Steen Beacon Hill Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.

Mrs. Shaner is survived by her husband, Joe Shaner; daughters, Ariellrose Shaner, Ashley Shaner, both of Lakeland; son, Anthony Shaner, Lakeland; sisters, Barbara, Linda and Debbie.

Born in Johnson County, N.C., on Oct. 21, 1922, she came to Lakeland from North Carolina in 1956. She was a grader at Florida Tile. She was a member of Bible Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Addison is survived by her husband, Richard L. Addison; sons, John W. Barefoot, Golden D. Barefoot, both of Lakeland; brothers, John Coats, North Carolina, E.C. Coats, Groveland, Bill Coats, Fort Lauderdale, Raiford Coats, North Carolina; sister, Betty Shields, Boca Raton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (September 21, 2005) at Gentry-Morrison Northside Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday (September 22, 2005) at the funeral home chapel.

Deborah Montgomery

Montgomery DEBORAH MONTGOMERY, 54

LAKELAND -- Tennis was a passion of Mrs. Deborah Lynn "Debbie" Montgomery.

"She played league play and local tournaments," her husband of 34 years, Anthony H. "Tony" Montgomery, said. "She was very involved in junior tennis and did a lot of volunteering with the city of Lakeland. She has been a heck of a volunteer for tennis for over 25 years."

Mrs. Montgomery, the administrative assistant for Bunch and Associates in Lakeland, died of cancer Sunday (Sept. 18, 2005) at home. She was 54.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, on Jan. 23, 1951, she and her husband wed in Montreal on May 29, 1971. The family came to Lakeland from Alberta in 1979, the same year that Mrs. Montgomery developed an interest in tennis.

"When she got involved in tennis, she just fell in in love with game. She would take lessons and lessons," Tony Montgomery said. "When she would get a job, she would always try to find a job where she would have shift work so she she could play tennis in the morning. Bunch and Associates had a second shift and it just worked out perfect for her."

Mrs. Montgomery was employed with Bunch and Associates for a year.

Mrs. Montgomery, who was very active in the United Tennis Association, served as director of setting up tournaments.

"She enjoyed the volunteer part of it and helping out in junior tournaments," Tony Montgomery said. "When the U.S. Open was on, she didn't miss any of it, even being in the condition she was in. She would be lying there and watching the tennis. Tennis was a true love for her."

In addition to her husband, Anthony H. Montgomery, Mrs. Montgomery is survived by her sons, Travis Montgomery and Jory Montgomery, both of Lakeland; sisters, Joan Kennell, Barre, Vt., Fay Peterson, Lakeland, and Pat "Ann" Davidson, Atlanta; brothers, Bill Widgington and Brian Widgington, both of Montreal, Quebec; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday (September 21, 2005) at Gentry-Morrison Southside Funeral Chapel., 1727 S. Bartow Road, Lakeland.
